Summertime prep for your apartment

woman in a chair on a bright patioAre you ready for summer? It’s about that time of year to bust out your bathing suit, start putting those little bright colored umbrellas in your drinks and get ready to enjoy what for many are their favorite months of the year.

Summer is the time that I most appreciate my apartment. It’s great to actually be able to sit out on the back porch (much of the year I don’t get any sunshine hitting my tiny patio) and enjoy a nice glass of wine or lemonade after a long day at the office. On the weekend, it’s nice to hear some kids from the complex actually using our shared swimming pool (usually they aren’t too obnoxious).

Of course, it doesn’t hurt to kick off the summer but giving your apartment a pre-summer cleaning and sprucing up. You’ll probably be welcoming guests and visitors into your home in the next year months, so get it looking perfect!

Start by performing that ritual you should do every six months (no, not getting your teeth cleaned). Flip your mattress to preserve its life and give yourself a better nighttime sleeping experience. While you’re at it, wash that mattress pad (the quilted looking thing underneath your fitted sheet) and maybe even your dust ruffle that hides the bottom of your bed.

vacuum the couch Moving on to the living room, pre-summer is a great time to vacuum your sofa.  There’s all sorts of things hiding underneath those cushions, maybe you’ll even find the remote you misplaced or some spare change for candy.

If you have pets, the beginning of summer is a great time to get them groomed, clip their nails and have them looking their best.  They’ll thank you for it too when the weather gets warm and they are way too hot in that fur coat. Check out these great summer fashions for your pooch or kitty.

If you have travel plans this summer, now is a good time to prepare your plans for having someone take care of your apartment while you’re away. Even if you don’t have pets or many plants to water, it doesn’t hurt to have someone stay at your home while you are gone – it discourages break ins.

Don’t forget to get together with a few of your apartment neighbors on a plan for your next neighborhood BBQ. The start of summer is a great time to welcome to neighbors to the complex. You’ll get to know one another and look forward to a summer of fun times and socializing ahead.

Enjoy your summer and don’t forget to use your sunscreen!
