How to have your cheapest, funnest weekend ever
If you’re looking to save some money but still enjoy yourself this weekend, there are some of our best tips for fun ways to pass two days of free time (and by free, we mean without work, as well as without costing you $$) at your apartment. We’ve tried to keep the budget as low as it can go, so you can save your pennies for a real vacation sometime soon.
Saturday: What’s for breakfast? Instead of heading out for an expensive restaurant meal, raid your fridge. Chances are you can find some eggs, cheese, and maybe some leftover lunchmeat or veggies from the week in there. Chop it all up and you’ve got the makings of a great omelette! That’ll be $12, please.
Next up, head out for a tour of your city’s free attractions. Check out local monuments, museums, and pack a snack for a stay at the park later on. Don’t have a public library card? Why not? There’s all sorts of books, technology and media-based entertainment options available, which you can use for free, at your local library. Stop by and pick one up and take out some audio books or even the old fashioned kind to enjoy later at the park. This is a great way to waste away several hours of the day.
Reading not your thing? Try people watching instead. The ultimate free pastime, this is a great way to amuse yourself. How many people do you see wearing headphones? With tattoos? Wearing strappy sandals? If you’re with a friend, make guesses as to how many you’ll see in each category and see who comes in closest to the pin.
Saturday night, host a game night in at your apartment. You’re the host, so as long as you provide the games, ask your guests to bring the drinks, snacks and dessert. Viola! Instant free dinner, delivered to your door. See how easy that was?
Sunday: First of all, Sundays are for sleeping in. You can snooze right through breakfast and not have to cook or worry about going out. That does, however, mean you’ll be hungry for lunch. Find your neighborhood’s best street food joint and splurge on a hot dog, falafel, tacos or other tasty cheap eats.
Sunday afternoon is the perfect time to laze the day away. Head back to your favorite park or camp out in your apartment’s common space, where you might run into some of your neighbors. Don’t be shy about asking what they’re up to on Sunday evening – maybe you’ll score a dinner invite. If not, not to worry. It’s time to hit your nearest Trader Joe’s or discount grocery to plan your meals for the week, so cook up a bargain-priced healthy dinner at home and maybe even save some leftovers for Monday’s lunch. Hey, you’re getting pretty good at this money saving thing!
