Celebrate Anti-Boredom Month with other obscure holidays
Who knew? July is national Anti-Boredom Month, so if you’re feeling a little dull, there’s a good reason for it. It’s also the so-called “Dog Days” of summer, when the weather is hot and we’re all stuck in our apartments afraid to go outside because we’ll melt. (Speaking of which, you do have air conditioning, right? If not maybe it’s time to find a new place.)
But just because you’ve been spending more free time in your apartment lately doesn’t mean you have to be bored. Turns out there are all sorts of crazy obscure holidays to celebrate in July that will keep you on your toes all month long. Here’s a few of the fun ones with easy ways to embrace the day.
In addition to being Anti-Boredom Month, it’s also Hitchhiking Month! If you really don’t want to be bored, maybe it’s time to get out of dodge with a little hitchhiking adventure. Just be careful. Did you know that hitchhikers are more likely to be a victim of a crime perpetrated by the person who picks them up then people who pick up hitchhikers are likely to get hurt? On second thought, maybe you’re safer at home in your apartment. Here’s some other ideas..
July 8: Don’t Put All Your Eggs in One Omelet Day – This is a Sunday so it’s the perfect day to mix up a delicious omelet for brunch. Add some cheese, veggies and meat so it won’t be all eggs.
July 10: Teddy Bear Picnic Day – If you are still playing with your teddy bears, there’s a good reason why you’re bored. But mix it up – how about going to see the summer comedy “Ted,” about a raucous back-taking live teddy bear, on this day?
July 11 or 12: International Town Criers Day – Hear yee! Hear yee! The holiday people aren’t sure whether this celebration of a long lost skill set is on a Wednesday or Thursday. But see how long you can roam the sidewalks shouting out the news of the day on either, and see how fast you can get a police officer summoned to do a health and welfare check. Life is never boring when you’re talking to the law!
July 14: National Nude Day – Here’s an interesting one. Probably best celebrated at home in your apartment. Otherwise, take to the streets sans clothes and see the last sentence of the paragraph above.
July 27 – Take Your Houseplants for a Walk Day – Seriously, who makes this stuff up?
Happy Anti-Boredom Month! How are you celebrating?
