Best dog breeds for apartments – medium and large edition
…and we’re back! If you’re looking for the perfect dog for your apartment and can’t stand the yippy, little ones like we outlined in Part 1. Here are some good editions if you’re looking for some slightly larger canine friends.
Medium dog breeds
Medium breeds typically need more exercise than the smaller breeds, and longer hair means a bigger grooming commitment.
- American Eskimo
- Basenji
- Basset Hound
- Boxer
- Bulldog
- Glen of Imaal Terrier
- Italian Greyhound
- Shetland Sheepdog
- Whippet
Bulldog – Often have expensive health problems, but very affectionate with people and other pets. Low grooming needs and not very active, but walk them enough to prevent obesity.
Glen of Imaal Terrier – Good with kids and people, yippy with other animals. Low exercise and grooming needs.
Italian Greyhound – Loves running, but only require moderate walks. Quiet, gentle, and thrive in small spaces. Minimal grooming needs.
Large dog breeds
These larger breeds all require daily exercise, in most cases an hour or more of walking and playing outside per day. Also, for small apartments make sure they have room to move around comfortably.

- Malamute
- Mastiff
- Rottweiler
Bullmastiff – Very large, but lazy; exercise just enough to prevent obesity. Very affectionate, low grooming requirement.
Golden Retriever – High energy, so exercise is a must. Needs attention to grooming as well, but is affectionate and can thrive in a small apartment.
