Get poppin’, it’s National Popcorn Day!

Popcorn!Want to hear something really great and really strange too? OK, so we’re obsessed with popcorn around here. Making the perfect popcorn is basically the purpose of our existence lately, right after bringing you entertaining blog posts, of course.

So, naturally we were very excited to hear that there is such a thing as National Popcorn Day, which is celebrated Jan. 19. Or is it? Turns out the national popcorn advocacy nonprofit – yes, there is such a thing – doesn’t even know when National Popcorn Day is supposed to be!

This struck us as pretty darn strange. The alternative date for NPD is the Super Bowl, which is still a couple weeks away. Meanwhile, little old Jan. 19 is just your average cold and dreary January Thursday. So we’re celebrating today, and we hope you’ll celebrate too.

By the way, if you know of the origins of National Popcorn Day, the popcorn advocacy organization needs your help. You can reach them at edu@popcorn.org.

A teacher from Illinois came up with these great ideas for ways to celebrate. They are intended for kids, but we’re all just big kids at heart, right?

  1. Stringing popcorn (these could be hung outside for birds to enjoy)
  2. Popcorn air hockey—can you “volley” the kernel back and forth 20 times without letting it fall?
  3. Popcorn basketball: can you flick a piece of popcorn into the basket?
  4. Write a popcorn Haiku (5, 7, 5 syllable pattern poem)

Here’s our popcorn haiku

Popcorn, broke my heart

I miss that guy who made me

Butter salt not love

Your turn! Got a popcorn haiku for us? Try to make it less depressing than mine, eh? I hate tears in my popcorn.
