Art hanging primer for your apartments

You’ve got great art, beautiful pictures, and they’re all wrapped up in mah-velous frames… now what do you do? You want everything to look its best, particularly if you’ve invested a substantial amount in collecting some really nice pieces. Getting everything to look great is easier than you think; just keep these professional hanging tips in mind when you get to work.

Frames. Many people make the mistake of matching the frames to everything else in the room; what you really want to do is match the frame to the art it holds. That will encourage a cohesive, pleasing look.

Height. Look to galleries for inspiration, since they’re the experts. 57-60 inches is usually just right for your art to look good and be accessible.

Spacing. For dense collections, 1.5 to 2 inches between frames is perfect. Spread out if you have a little art to cover a lot of space.

Theme it up. Group pieces by content, by frame type, or by some other consistent theme. This helps create a unified style.

Big in the middle. When you have several pieces together, place the biggest one in the middle with smaller pieces surrounding. Creating a size gradient helps pull everything together.

Get creative. Branch out from wire or nails for hanging your pictures and art. You can use ribbon, an eye-catching chain, rope, or anything else that looks appealing.

Keep ‘em straight. A tiny bit of adhesive putty or even just a rolled piece of tape will keep pictures straight and save you the hassle of wondering “Doesn’t this go a little bit to the right…?”

The most important home art tip of all – buy art and pictures that you love, not what someone else says you should love. Surrounding yourself with things that you find beautiful is the key to having a beautiful home.
