Belmont Pier Pirate Invasion threatens city, sanity, sobriety
So if there’s ever been a reason to scram down the 710 Freeway and hit the sand in Long Beach, this weekend’s Belmont Pier Pirate Invasion is it. Basically this is a weekend of entertainment, food, and fun filled with pirates, dancing, impromptu squeezebox serenades, pirates, wenches, boozing, pirates, family attractions, treasure hunts, pirates, and also pirates and some wenches.
- Black powder presentations
- Sword fights & pirate battles
- Parade of pirates
- Pirate ship attacks on the pier
- Pirate costume contest
- Pirate booty arts & crafts booths
- Belly and fire dancers
- Authentic pirate encampments
- Kids’ treasure hunt
- Food, grog and rum on Belmont Pier
- Feature Band: The Dread Crew of Oddwood
If you’re really, really lucky you might catch a glimpse of Captain Jack Sparrow… haha just kidding you’ll actually run into roughly a thousand Sparrows, in various stages of belligerence.
Here are some highlights from a couple years ago:
Did I mention that the kids at Long Beach State and Long Beach City College turn this into a big party down on 2nd Street? These young ‘uns know how to throw a fiesta. You’ll see them rolling up and down the block in festive regalia, flourishing skull ‘n’ bones flags, wielding mighty flagons of grog, seizing stray booty, and basically going nuts. Order a “Shoot the Root” at any bar in Belmont if you want to fit in just like a local, pound it in one toss or a swashbuckler might run ye through.
Admission is FREE! Food, beverages, and all kinds of merchandise are for sale. Check out the website for complete schedule and event information.
