The area now known as North Hollywood was previously named “Lankershim” and before that “Toluca”. Dubbed “The Home of the Peach” in 1903, when the Bonner Fruit Company was the area’s biggest employer, canning more than a million tons of peaches and other fruits grown in the valley, the region was annexed to the City of Los Angeles in 1919 and 1923, and renamed North Hollywood in 1927. A surge of new construction transformed the North Hollywood area from a farming community into a suburb of Los Angeles. North Hollywood is part of the larger Los Angeles Unified School District, and is situated in the Local District Northeast, which also includes San Fernando and nearby Van Nuys.
