Summertime event lineup
Yes, as summer stretches her arms in full swing, things get a little thin in the “stuff to do” category. I don’t know what it is about summer in Dallas that stifles goings on. Maybe the stifling summer heat is Dallas’ version of a brutal Midwest winter that keeps everyone indoors or maybe it’s because school is out and everyone leaves town for vacation. At any rate, there are always ate least few shows to check out no matter what the weather is like.
To start, on Wednesday (June 20) Van Halen is playing with Kool and the Gang at American Airlines Center. Don’t worry; we had to do a double take too. Honestly, I’d go just to see Kool and the Gang fans rocking out to Van Halen and then see Van Halen fans get down on it.
Also at American Airlines Center, Coldplay is coming for not one but two shows (Friday, June 22 and Saturday, June 23). Hey, it’s only cheeky of them if neither night sells out. So far, neither night has sold out. Sorry Coldplay, only Kylie Minogue can sell out several arena shows, and in mere minutes to boot. It’s actually quite amazing.
For something a little lower key with local flavor, Dallas darling Emily Elbert is opening for Tiger Darrow at the Kessler Theater in Oak Cliff on Thursday (June 21).
In comedy, Wayne Brady has 5 shows scheduled over June 22, 23 and 24 at The Improv in Arlington. Yes, I’ll say it. White people love Wayne Brady. So get your white-ass down there because that guy is hilarious.
Finally, for a little rough-and-tumble, there is always the roller derby. Little known fact: DFW actually has two roller derby leagues. The Dallas Derby Devils claim to be the largest flat track derby league in the south. The Assassination City league claims to be the only flat track derby league in Dallas County. I’m sure there’s some kind of animosity there. They should play each other and get it out in the ring! Both leagues play Saturdays.
