Nick Floyd has single-handedly made northwest Indiana cool. This is the heartland of the Three Floyds Brewing Co. beerxperience. Where does the magic happen that has earned Three Floyds ‘Best Brewer in the World’ awards for 2007 and 2009-2012? Right here.

Three Floyds’ famed brews are typically lauded for their bold, hoppy flavors. Nick, along with father Michael and brother Simon, focus on a tight lineup of superb lagers, ales, and IPAs. Since the debut of the first batch in 1996, it’s been an almost uninterrupted ride to the top of the craft beer world.

Part of the Floyds magic is savvy marketing. Nick is a charismatic guy and he’s cornered the market on melding beer geekery with his other passions: Dungeons & Dragons and heavy metal music. Those loves have inspired Three Floyds’ notoriously outré label art and creative names:

  •  Alpha King
  • Arctic Panzer Wolf
  • Dreadnaught
  • Gumballhead
  • Jinx Proof
  • Pride and Joy
  • Robert the Bruce
  • ZombieDust

Another key part of the formula is keeping things small and under control. Three Floyds only distributes to Chicago, Indiana, Milwaukee, Louisville, Madison, and Ohio (every once in a while). Nick has 60 employees working for him, and he’s certain that’s more than enough. You’re not gonna catch him selling out to the Anheuser-Buschs of the world.

So what does the brand that can do no wrong do for an encore? How about a Chicago brewpub, does that turn you on? Nick is currently scouting locations, the only detail that’s set is the location: “Anywhere but the Loop.” But he does promise that the new location will feature Chicago-only pours – whenever it debuts, Three Floyds Chicago promises to be the hottest ticket in town.
