Gather friends at the Union of BBQ and Sushi

Union Sushi + Barbecue Bar may just be your new favorite hangout.

Every newspaper, magazine, and website about Chicago is bound to mention the restaurant scene eventually. We’re one of the foodie capitals of the nation! With that said, we’ve grown accustomed to great food and we can be pretty picky eaters. Restaurateurs here have to pull out all of the stops, master their craft, and come up with something pretty intriguing to catch our attention. If they manage to do that, they’ve got to keep surprising us for months to come in order to earn their stripes as an establishment in town.

One such survivor is a joint called Union Sushi + Barbecue Bar. You can find it at 230 W. Erie St. With all of the Asian fusion restaurants in the world that serve up Japanese, Chinese, and Thai on a seamless menu, it was only a matter of time before someone would be bright enough to remember to include scrumptious Korean food to the mix. Lucky for us, it was a restaurant right here in Chicago.

Union Sushi is a Michelin Guide Recommended, Zagat rated haven of delicious food and fun times. Creative meal options, good drinks, and a lively atmosphere combine to create a tiny part of Chicago that is always ready for a good time.

Inside, guests are greeted by a cheerful and funky interior with bright contrasting colors on the walls. Silver is the neutral de jour, popping vibrantly with the illustrious sheen of brushed metal. In the artwork, organic curves collide with geometric figures in this neighborhood eatery that feels natural yet edgy, inviting yet a tab bit exclusive.

The menu includes inspirations from throughout Asia, jazzed up with “a playful American approach.” I was glad to see that—in addition to seafood, poultry, fowl, pork and beef—there is a wide variety of vegetarian options as well as a few oddities like gator. (When was the last time that you saw an alligator in Chicago?)
