It’s never too late to learn to swim

father playing with daughter during swim lessons in atlantaMore than 70 percent of the earth’s surface is covered by water. Expand your horizons by learning to swim!

I have a confession: I’m a terrible swimmer. I can save my own life in the most basic situations. If things look sticky, I can float until someone who really knows how to swim can come save me. Yet I’ve never been the backstroke, butterfly, freestylin’ woman of the water. And I spent my formative years in Florida less than a 20-minute drive from the beach. Isn’t that just a shame?!

Well, I got tired of seeing sexy surfers, brave paddlers on the white waters, and scuba divers exploring the depths of the unknown while I sat on the sidelines with my floaties. It’s time to learn and I invite you to join me!

Taking adult swim classes is as easy way to get your feet wet. The trainers here have put up with people like us for years so no phobia is going to surprise them. They’ve got dozens of techniques to help you become more comfortable with the water.

For those with a basic swimming background, there are also classes to help you develop your technique and swim more efficiently.

Dynamo Swim School offers classes for sprouting swimmers of all ages. The best experience, in my opinion, is at the classes that take place at the Athletic Center pool at Agnes Scott College in Decatur. After class my niece and I head towards downtown Decatur by foot and grab ice cream at Jake’s or froyo at The Yogurt Tap. You’ll have a stellar learning experience at the Dynamo locations in Chamblee, Buckhead, Alpharetta and Dunwoody as well.

Atlanta Swim School was founded by nationally renowned champion Sabir Muhammad. Swimmers or all ages and ability levels can strengthen their game here! Courses are taught at Washington Park Natatorium and Grant Park Pool.

Piedmont Park Conservancy hosts classes throughout the summer but the classes are for kids only. Adults can only participate if they are working with a child. Private lessons are available for adults, at $30 for 30 minutes or $130 for the week.

Swim Atlanta hosts classes in Cumming, Roswell, Hamilton Mill, Johns Creek, and Sugarloaf. Classes here have plenty of sections and subsections based on age and ability so it’s easy to find where you fit in.
