Apps that make apartment living easier for roommates

Take the guess work out of living fair and square with these handy apps.roommates using technology to work together

A household runs smoothly when everyone marches to the beat of the same drum. Keeping the rhythm steady is hard, particularly when roommates are faced with busy schedules, varying incomes, and a slew of other distractions.

But fortunately for modern renters, there are plenty of apps to help us stay in tune! Check out these useful tools for roommates:

Sometimes, splitting the utility bills evenly doesn’t seem fair. The roommate who is barely home pays just as much as the roommate who blow-dries her hair twice and day and leaves every electronic in her room running while she’s out for a morning jog. The solution: Green Envy, an app that lets you break down energy usage by room, which will ultimately let you divide the bill more fairly. Pay for the energy that you use and not a cent more.

Share-a-Bill not only allows users to equally divide bill payments, it also allows you to note who paid what and when. Note the date, currency, transaction type, and highlight the folks who need to pay up—I mean, have an outstanding balance. The app proves ideal for roommate situations with more than two tenants. (You can also whip out this app next time you’re at a group dinner to make paying the tab easier.)

Use Cozi Calendar to synch your calendars to keep all roommates on the same page. Document bill payment dates, group outings, trash take out day, work schedules, birthdays, and just about any other scheduled activity that others should be aware of. You can import other e-calendars as well or keep your personal and roommate calendars separate.
