The major city in Pennsylvania’s Amish County, Lancaster is home to the oldest continuously operated Farmers Market in the entire nation. Produce comes from regional farms. Health care, manufacturing and tourism are the major industries here. Lancaster has been controversial for its citywide video surveillance system, intended to cut down on crime. Ten years after their installation, the cameras do appear to have had a positive impact. You won’t see the rural buggy-driving lifestyle of the Amish in downtown Lancaster, but the city’s museums celebrate the rich religious heritage of the greater area. Shopping and dining are available in the heart of the city.
